Voice Engine Optimization — where we are, and where we are going
When somebody asks a phone out loud for a barber that is open now, a different system decides what it says back. This is the newest of the four disciplines and the one where we have the least to claim — so this page is mostly about what is already working in your favour, and what we have not built yet.
What voice search actually asks of a business
Spoken queries are longer, more conversational and far more likely to be urgent and local than typed ones. Nobody says "barber huntington beach". They say "who can cut my hair near here this afternoon". Three things follow from that.
Voice assistants answer with one business, occasionally two — the shortlist is shorter than any screen. They lean heavily on immediate practical facts: are you open right now, how far away are you, can the caller reach you. And they read facts, not layouts — a voice assistant never sees your design, only the data underneath it.
The good news: you are already largely optimised for this
The substrate voice assistants read is the same substrate we have been describing throughout this section. Your structured opening hours are what lets an assistant say "yes, they are open until six". Your structured address is what lets it say "about a mile away". Your published phone number is what it offers to dial. Your services with prices are what let it answer "do they do beard trims".
All of that is published on every Atelier plan by default. If you have set your hours and locations up properly, you have done most of the work that voice optimisation asks for, and you did it while setting up your booking system.
The conversational half is helped by the same FAQ sections that serve answer engines. Questions written the way a customer would actually say them tend to be exactly what a spoken query matches against.
What we have not built — stated plainly
We do not integrate with Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant. There is no Atelier voice app, no spoken booking flow, and nothing on the platform answers a phone call with a synthetic voice.
Our AI booking assistant is deliberately text — it handles SMS and web chat and it is genuinely good at those. It does not take voice calls, and we are not going to imply otherwise, because a shop that buys a voice product and receives a texting product has been sold something it did not agree to. If you need calls answered today, that is a phone-answering service, and it is not us.
What we are working toward
The direction is voice as another channel into the same booking engine, built on the same live availability the web wizard and the text assistant already use, so that a booking made by voice is subject to the same rules as every other booking — the right buffers, the right staff, the right deposit. Doing that properly is more interesting than bolting a speech layer onto a chatbot, and it is why we would rather ship it late than early.
We are not putting a date on it here. When there is something real, it will have a feature page with specifics rather than a paragraph of intent.
What to do about voice in the meantime
Keep your hours accurate, including holidays, because "open now" is the single most consulted fact in a spoken local query. Keep your address and phone number identical everywhere they appear. Write your FAQ answers the way you would say them aloud. And keep your Google Business Profile current — voice assistants lean on it heavily for exactly the kind of urgent, nearby question they are usually asked.
That is genuinely the whole list today, and none of it is wasted effort: it is the same work that local SEO, answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation already reward. Back to getting found, all four disciplines.
Four things every Atelier tenant gets, on day one
- A brand-fit URL. Pick a vertical-branded subdomain on day one (yourshop.atelier.salon, .tattoo, .spa, .dance, .fitness, .golf, .dog, .pet, .skin, or seated.studio). Connect a domain you own any time, no upgrade tier.
- Pick a plan, not a parts list. Forms, staff profiles, two-way calendar sync, no-show protection, waitlists, resource scheduling, multi-location support, reviews and in-person card payments, all in the plan, including the free one. Gift cards, packages and text reminders come with every paid plan. That leaves a short list of clearly-priced extras, the Marketing Suite, the AI Suite, window kiosk displays, and branding removal, and the higher plans fold some of those in too.
- Flat as your team grows. Unlimited staff, services, and customers: the same bill with five team members as with fifty, on every plan. Additional locations are a flat $25/month each, with your full plan at each.
- A free directory listing. Every paid plan (Booking Pro and up) is auto-listed in the public Atelier directory. New customers find you there and click straight through to your booking URL, no commission, no per-booking fee, no marketplace cut.
